ND: We lived near Halychyna [at that time, Poland]. People crossed the river Zbruch [Soviet-Polish border] clandestinely to get sugar beet pulp. People were shot at when trying to return. My sister was wounded there, after trading a handkerchief for sugar beet pulp. You could mix it with orach, and it was edible.
